A Maverick vies for Miss America

A recent Minnesota State Mankato student – and Miss Minnesota — Kathryn Kueppers competes Thursday, Dec. 19 in Connecticut for the title of Miss America.

The event will be broadcast on NBC at 7 p.m. CST.

Kueppers has been championing the new direction of the Miss America program, which in recent years has eliminated the swimsuit competition and placed more emphasis on scholarship, education and character.

Kathryn Kueppers, Miss Minnesota, studied family and consumer science at the University in 2018-19.

The change and its impact are the focus of her candidacy’s social impact initiative – formerly called platform – which she will present at the competition Thursday night.

Kueppers was crowned Miss Minnesota in summer of 2019, and is the daughter of a former Miss Minnesota as well, Vicki Plaster Kueppers, who was crowned in 1983.

Kathryn attended Minnesota State Mankato in the 2018-2019 school year, studying family and consumer science. She was crowned Miss Minnesota in summer of 2019.
